Officers cleared after suspect dies during arrest

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A West Virginia police department has cleared two officers involved in an arrest where the suspect unexpectedly died.

Charleston police cleared Officer Job Ouma and Senior Patrolman Erick Miller after 36-year-old Adam Myers died while being arrested Tuesday afternoon.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports Myers was accused of beating and choking his father, Walter Myers, 73.

Police Chief Steve Cooper says Adam Myers locked both arms against his side. Authorities say body camera video eventually shows police handcuffing him. He lost consciousness a short time later. Both officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

The Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office also reviewed the video and deemed the officers’ behaviour appropriate.

Adam Myers’ cause of death was not immediately known.
