Feds set tougher standards for rail tank cars with 2025 deadline
OTTAWA – Transport Canada has proposed series of tougher standards for rail tank cars, to be fully implemented by 2025. Here’s a look at some of the new requirements:
Top protection: A shield for valves and accessories on top of the cars.
Fire protection: A thermal jacket to help tankers withstand fires.
Stronger construction: Tank shells and heads will be made of thicker steel to improve puncture resistance and structural strength.
Front shields: This will cover the entire head of the tank car to provide more puncture protection.
New bottom outlet valves: These will help ensure valves don’t leak after accidents.
