German government confirms Merkel will travel to Minsk summit, but says result still uncertain

BERLIN – Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman is confirming that the German leader will travel to Minsk for the planned summit with the Russian, Ukrainian and French presidents.

Steffen Seibert said the fact that Wednesday evening’s meeting in Belarus is going ahead offers “a glimmer of hope but not more” in the effort to defuse the conflict in Ukraine.

Seibert said: “It is uncertain whether a result can be achieved.”
