NYC seeks footage from doc in suit stemming from Central Park jogger case

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Lawyers for New York City are seeking access to footage gathered by documentary filmmaker Ken Burns in research for his movie about the five men exonerated in the Central Park Jogger rape case.

The New York Times reports (http://nyti.ms/O3HzGS ) the city has issued a subpoena for the outtakes and other materials from the film “The Central Park Five.” The request is connected to a $250 million lawsuit filed by the men against the city after their sentences were vacated.

Attorney John Siegal represents Burns and others who worked on the project. He argues the city won’t be able to prove the material is necessary to its defence and unavailable elsewhere.

City lawyer Celeste Koeleveld says the city should receive access to the materials. She says the convictions were obtained properly.
