Canadian Olympian goaltender Shannon Szabados named SPHL player of the week
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – Goaltender Shannon Szabados, a two-time Olympic gold-medallist with Canada’s women’s hockey team, has been named the Southern Professional Hockey League’s player of the week.
Szabados went 2-0-0 with a 1.49 goals-against average and a .963 save percentage last week, helping the Columbus Cottonmouths increase their winning streak to six games.
Szabados stopped 35 of 36 shots and assisted on the game-winning goal in overtime last Tuesday as Columbus defeated the Fayetteville FireAntz 2-1.
She came back on Saturday with a 42-save performance in Columbus’ 3-2 road win over the Mississippi RiverKings.
The Edmonton native is the first woman to play in the SPHL. She has won 11 gold and six silver medals in all international competition for Canada’s women’s team since 2006.
She was also the first women to play in the Western Hockey League, suiting up in four exhibition games for the Tri-City Americans in 2002.
