Republicans capture Democratic Senate seat in South Dakota; 3rd of 6 needed for majority

WASHINGTON – Republicans are halfway there in their fight to win control of the Senate.

Republican Mike Rounds won a Democratic-held Senate seat in South Dakota, the third of six Republicans need for a Senate majority.

The onetime South Dakota governor won a four-way race to replace Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson, who is retiring.

The Democrats kept a Senate seat in Michigan with Gary Peters’ win over Republican Terri Lynn Land. Democratic Sen. Carl Levin is retiring.

Democratic incumbents won in Delaware, Illinois and Rhode Island, while Republican Sen. John Cornyn won re-election in Texas.
