International media cover ‘Canadian’ political shooting

MONTREAL – A politically related shooting that cut short the victory party of Parti Quebecois Leader Pauline Marois is drawing international attention.

Media outlets ranging from the BBC, to France’s Le Figaro, to Al Jazeera quickly picked up the story.

“One shot dead at victory speech of Canadian politician,” said a headline at the top of CNN’s website — placed alongside news about first lady Michelle Obama’s speech at the opening of the U.S. Democratic Convention.

“Gunfire at Election Party in Quebec,” read another report in the New York Times.

Atop the BBC’s website was a photo of Marois and the headline: “Shooting mars Quebec leader’s win.”

Marois, whose PQ won a minority government, was rushed off the stage of a downtown nightclub in the middle of her speech when gunfire rang out around midnight Tuesday.

A suspect in his 50s was tackled to the ground by police. At least two people were shot and one man was killed.
