VENICE, Italy – Thelma Schoonmaker has been awarded the second Gucci award for women’s achievement in filmmaking for her work editing “Hugo.”
Actress Salma Hayek-Pinault announced the award Friday evening at a private dinner at the Cipriani Hotel hosted by Gucci creative director Frida Giannini on the sidelines of the Venice Film Festival.
Schoonmaker, 72, has been a long-time collaborator of Martin Scorsese’s, and told that awards gathering that she would have never gotten into filmmaking if the two had not meant as film students in New York University in the early 1960s.
Gucci will make a grant of $25,000 in Schoonmaker’s name to New York University’s film and television school.
