$1.2M beachfront park opens on Jekyll Island

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Jekyll Island has completed another addition to its tourism makeover.

The Jekyll Island Authority’s board held a ribbon cutting to open the new $1.2 million Corsair Beach Park. The park on the southern end of the island’s centerpiece beach village includes two picnic pavilions, new restrooms and outdoor showers. It also adds 123 parking spaces to one of the most popular areas of the island state park.

A news release from the authority says the project was paid for with state funding and Glynn County sales tax revenues, with a hotel operator contributing $110,000 for some of the parking spots.

Georgia taxpayers have chipped in more than $75 million in recent years on amenities to lure more tourists to Jekyll Island, including a new convention centre that opened in 2012.
