MIAMI – Forecasters say a tropical depression has formed off the Windward Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and storm watches have been issued for the islands of Barbados, Dominica, Martinique and St. Lucia among other places.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Wednesday afternoon that maximum sustained winds are at 35 mph (55 kph) and the storm is moving to the west-northwest at 18 mph (kph).

Forecasters say the storm is expected to strengthen and be near the Windward Islands on Friday. It could become a tropical storm later Wednesday or Thursday.

Storm watches also are out for the Grenadines, St. Vincent and Guadeloupe.
