Whitecaps sign veteran centre back Andy O’Brien from Leeds United

VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Whitecaps have acquired centre back Andy O’Brien from Leeds United of the English League Championship.

The team didn’t release details of the contract but says it’s pending receipt of O’Brien’s International Transfer Certificate and visa.

O’Brien played in more than 300 English Premier League games and made nearly 500 appearances in professional soccer in England.

The 33-year-old comes to the Whitecaps after spending a decade-and-a-half playing in England.

The 6-foot-3, 175-pound centre back spent the last two seasons with Leeds United AFC, where he scored two goals in 38 appearances.

A native of Harrogate, England, O’Brien has dual British-Irish citizenship and has represented the Republic of Ireland at the international level.
