20-year-old man killed trying to run across Highway 1 near Hope, B.C.

HOPE, B.C. – A 20-year-old man who tried to run across Highway 1 near Hope, B.C., has died after being struck by a vehicle.

RCMP say police received a call about three young people walking westbound along Highway 3 at around 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

Cpl. Robert McDonald says officers patrolled the area but no pedestrians were found although a half hour later, police received another call about a man being hit on Highway 1.

He says a witness reported that four people were walking on the highway when one of them darted across a lane toward the centre grass area.

Police say the driver swerved to try to avoid the young man and a doctor stopped to provide first aid, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

McDonald says an 18-year-old woman and two 17-year-old boys were with the man who was killed and that alcohol is believed to be a factor in the tragedy.
