OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says there was an average of 252,000 job vacancies in the three-month period ending in April.
The agency says that’s an increase of 17,000 from the same period in 2011.
But for every vacancy, there were 5.6 unemployed people, which StatsCan says is down from 6.3 in April 2011.
The decline in the ratio is the result of both an increase in the number of vacancies and a decline in the number of unemployed people.
Overall, the national job vacancy rate was 1.8 per cent in the three-month period ending in April, up slightly from 1.7 per cent a year earlier.
