Census says fewer Americans looking for new housing than they were in 1999

WASHINGTON – Fewer Americans are looking for a new address than they were a decade ago.

New data from the Census Bureau show that more than 1 in 10 Americans moved between 2012 and 2013 because of job-, family- or housing-related reasons.

More than 35 million Americans changed residences, meaning that 11.7 per cent of people had a new address during that time period.

That’s a drop from 1999, the last time the Census Bureau checked on Americans’ moving status. More than 42 million people found a new home between 1998 and 1999, a rate of 15.9 per cent.

In both surveys, more Americans said they moved for housing reasons, like wanting a “new or better” home or apartment.
