Third annual Pink Shirt Day breakfast a success

Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs raised just over $10 000 for the Kindness movement at their 3rd Annual Pink Shirt Day Breakfast Presented by TELUS. 242 guests came out to support the Feb. 22 event.

In addition to funds from guests, event sponsors contributed goods and services that minimized event costs. Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs is grateful to TELUS, Glitz N’ Glam Decorating, Sysco Kelowna, Central Okanagan McDonalds, David’s Tea Kelowna, Kaleena Cakes, Doak Shirreff LLP, and the Okanagan College Culinary Arts Department for their tremendous support. Daniel Abraham Films and Student Union Productions also provided services at the event for a reduced cost.

The Breakfast began with a welcome speech from Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs CEO Diane Entwistle. Mayor Colin Basran then gave an impassioned speech about the importance of kindness and inclusivity in Kelowna and in Canada at large. After reading a Kindness Proclamation, the mic was given to keynote speaker Dr. John Tyler Binfet of UBC Okanagan.

Dr. Binfet used research, images, and videos to teach guests about intentional kindness in young people. The message resonated with audience members, who were able to apply Dr. Binfet’s message to their personal and professional behavior.

“It was truly incredible to see so many community members come together to support the Kindness movement,” said Diane Entwistle. “Dr. Binfet’s research showed how important it is for kids to have kind role models. We hope that adults in our community can be such role models and that is why Pink Shirt Day is important.”

Pink Shirt Day was also supported by House of Rose Winery and Carolily Finery, each of whom donated partial proceeds from pink goods to Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs during the month of February.
