Born: Feb. 13, 1958, in Thetford Mines, Que.

Education: Law degree, Universite du Quebec a Montreal (1979); master’s in communications, Universite du Quebec a Montreal (1991).

Professional career: Washington correspondent for La Presse, L’actualite and L’Evenement du jeudi (1985-1989); associate editor-in-chief, L’actualite (1990-1992); adviser to premiers Jacques Parizeau and Lucien Bouchard (1994-1999); visiting scholar, department of political science of the Universite de Montreal and Sciences Po (Institut d’etudes politiques) in Paris (2001-2003); executive director and co-founder of the Centre d’etudes et de recherches internationales de l’Universite de Montreal (CERIUM) (2004-2012).

Political career: Elected to legislature as Parti Quebecois member for Rosemont (2012); minister of international relations, La Francophonie and external trade (2012-14); minister responsible for the Montreal region (2012-14); re-elected to national assembly (2014); becomes PQ leader (2016).

Current riding: Rosemont, in Montreal.
