Parents charged with neglect after their baby is found dead

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A man and woman in south Mississippi are charged with felony child neglect after their baby was found dead in an apartment.

Martina Cecile Fillingane and Robert Howard Ashcraft, who are both 40 and live in Hattiesburg, were charged Monday and remained in the Forrest County Jail on Tuesday, awaiting initial court appearances.

It was not immediately clear whether either is represented by an attorney.

WDAM-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2aXGzYd ) that body of their 7-week-old baby, River Ashcraft, was found Monday morning at the apartment.

The Hattiesburg American reports (http://hatne.ws/2aXDTtx ) that investigators were on the scene a few hours, talking to nearby residents and collecting evidence.

Forrest County Deputy Coroner Lisa Klem says the baby’s body was sent to the state Crime Lab for an autopsy.
