Syrian refugee crowned German ‘wine queen’

BERLIN – A 26-year-old Syrian student has become the first refugee to be crowned queen of one of Germany’s wine-making regions.

Ninorta Banho was crowned ‘wine queen’ Wednesday by a group of vintners in Trier, an ancient town near Germany’s western border with Luxembourg.

The Syriac Christian, who fled the war in Syria 3 1/2 years ago, will spend the next year representing the winemakers of Trier-Olewig at dozens of events in the Moselle region.
