Thursday’s Games
EDITOR’S NOTE: “Mr. Hockey: My Story,” a new book by Gordie Howe, hits the shelves Oct. 14. The 86-year-old Howe, who has a form of dementia, is not doing media interviews to promote the book. However, publisher Viking has provided exclusively to The Canadian Press the text of a Q and A between Howe and Wayne Gretzky, which was conducted by email in September. A close friend of the Howe family, Gretzky wanted to be involved in the book’s release. Gretzky and an editor at Viking worked together to come up with the questions for the interview — the only one Howe will do to promote the book. Marty Howe, Gordie’s son, transcribed his father’s answers.
TORONTO – Nazem Kadri has been able to get under Sidney Crosby’s skin before. Proof of that came on HBO’s “24/7” show last year when the Pittsburgh Penguins star called the Toronto Maple Leafs centre a “dummy” and a “joke.”

TORONTO – Like his playing days, Gordie Howe’s career as an author has spanned decades.
KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Damage to a fish habitat should cost the millionaire owner of two hockey teams and his company $300,000, a Crown lawyer has told a sentencing hearing.
The NHL has hired Chris Pronger to work in the department of player safety, deciding that having the future Hall of Fame defenceman in its office was worth the perceived conflict of interest.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – An agreement is in place for the Arizona Coyotes to change owners for the second time in 14 months.
EDMONTON – Peter Pocklington, the man who launched the Edmonton Oilers dynasty, then loathed for decades for trading Wayne Gretzky, welled up with tears Friday when he came home to a standing ovation.
Friday’s Games

PHILADELPHIA – Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau earned credit for Montreal’s winning goal. The Canadiens kept their perfect record, though, on the strength of a gutsy third period.

TORONTO – It’s only Game 2 and the Maple Leafs are already throwing themselves on their sword.

The George Stroumboulopoulos era has officially begun.

TAMPA, Fla. – Coach Paul MacLean called the Ottawa Senators’ first win of the season a whole team effort.

ST. LOUIS – Paul Stastny is feeling right at home with his new team.

VANCOUVER – Ryan Miller’s home debut with the Vancouver Canucks didn’t quite go according to plan, but he came up big when it counted most.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose coach Todd McLellan would seem to have plenty to be pleased about after watching his team post consecutive shutouts to open the season.
Saturday’s Games

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The New York Rangers spent the first part of the night celebrating the success of last season, and the rest of it trying to figure out what has gone wrong so far in this one.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The banners are affixed to the rafters, and the Stanley Cup has been put away. The Los Angeles Kings finally got back to the everyday business of winning hockey with a boost from the line with the catchiest nickname from last season’s championship run.
Sunday’s Games

Ask players around the league who’s the fastest skater in the NHL and the same handful of names come up: Taylor Hall, Michael Grabner, Blake Wheeler, Andrew Cogliano and Carl Hagelin.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Montreal Canadiens centre Tomas Plekanec if the first star of the opening week of the NHL season.

TAMPA, Fla. – Steven Stamkos was a little upset at himself after not scoring a goal in the first two games of the season. He took out his frustration on the Montreal Canadiens.
