Child escapes Vernon car crash with minor injuries

VERNON – Two people, one of them a nine-year-old, escaped with minor injuries after their car flipped onto its roof Monday.

The accident happened just after 3 p.m. Monday, May 4, at Highway 97 and College Way in Vernon, RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk said in a release.

“The investigation determined the vehicle had been travelling north bound on Highway 97,” Molendyk said. “It crossed three lanes of traffic, narrowly missing two oncoming semi-trucks, before hitting the ditch on the east side of the road, where it rolled onto its roof.”

Police and Vernon Fire Rescue crews found the 54-year-old driver and her nine-year-old passenger trapped in the grey Toyota Highlander. The jaws of life were used to get them out.

“Fortunately both parties… were only bruised up but were otherwise uninjured,” Molendyk said.

The pair, from Kelowna, were taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital to get checked out.
