Kelowna man busted after breaking into parked car, running from cops

A man caught breaking into a car in Kelowna last night was able to evade police for a short time, but it wasn’t long before he was getting his mugshot taken at the cop shop.

It started to unfold at 10:45 p.m. yesterday, Oct. 19, when police were informed that a man was overheard sharing his plan to break into a vehicle parked in the 1800 block of Underhill Street, according to an RCMP press release.

Officers arrived to find a man rummaging around in a vehicle from the passenger seat.

Then the man noticed the cops and fled on door to Enterprise Way. A short foot chase ensued but the man escaped on a bike.

Officers noticed a man on the bike fitting the description “a short time later,” the report reads.

The bike rider, a 33-year-old from Kelowna, was arrested. He was taken to the cop shop to be fingerprinted and photographed.

RCMP have had 111 negative interactions with the man in the past, which have resulted in 10 criminal charges.

He has been released pending further investigation. He is due in court Dec. 16, and police hope he will be charged with mischief under $5,000.

“Kelowna RCMP are continuing this investigation, gathering surveillance and statements from witnesses to ensure the best possible evidence is submitted to the courts who ultimately decide on moving forward with charges,” Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Const. Mike Della-Paolera said in the release.
