The emergency department at Dr. Helmcken Memorial Hospital in Clearwater is closed until 7 p.m. today, June 30.

Interior Health sent a public notice about the closure just after 5 p.m. yesterday and said area residents should call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

The Clearwater emergency department is normally open 24/7, but it's been closed overnight and during weekends a dozen times in the last few months.

The nearest available emergency department is at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.
