Police seek rightful owners of Canadian military medals recovered in Kelowna

RCMP in Kelowna are hoping someone can help them reunite historical and sentimental items with the rightful owners.

A Kelowna man had Canadian Second World War medals and a First World War Canadian discharge certificate in their possession and police determined they weren’t his during an investigation back in January, according to an RCMP media release.

Police say the discharge certificate was for a Cpl. John Milliman Wintermute. He served in both England and France, and was discharged on May 17, 1919.

It’s unknown who the medals from the Second World were issued to.

RCMP have also contacted the Okanagan Military Museum and other Canadian military partners for help.

“As senior serving member of the Canadian Armed Forces it’s important to me personally these items of the ultimate sacrifice be returned back to the rightful heirs of those who have served with honour,” RCMP Cpl. Ammo Vecchio said in the release.

If anyone has any information regarding these items is asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
