Picnic parties will ‘pop-up’ on downtown Penticton streets

Penticton will be closing a couple downtown streets to traffic for picnic parties in June.

The roadways will become parklets during two Saturday afternoons in June, according to a press release from the City of Penticton. The public is encouraged to order lunch from local restaurants and enjoy some free entertainment. This year's events are building upon the city's picnic campaign from last year

“Pop-up Picnic-ton is a Love Local initiative to promote shopping, eating, drinking and supporting local. Order your takeout meal and head down to this pop-up event to eat outdoors, play some yard games, listen to live music and enjoy the street park atmosphere,” economic development manager Carly Lewis said in the release.

Picnic-goers can also grab some lunch at the Penticton Farmers’ Market which runs on Saturdays.

“Picnic-ton is a great opportunity to support our local businesses and reconnect with friends and family over a picnic. We hope you enjoy this Love Local activity and thank you for supporting local,” Mayor John Vassilaki said in the release.

The City has listed numerous local food options onto a map of Penticton. Business owners who want the description of their establishment changed can send an email, 35 words or less, to economic.development@penticton.ca.

The two picnic dates dates are June 4 on Winnipeg Street at Estabrook Avenue, and June 18 along the 500 block of Main Street. Both events take places from noon to 4 p.m.
