Day of mourning in Spain after fishing boat sinks off N.L., with 21 dead or missing

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. – A Spanish air force plane left St. John's today to bring home the survivors and the dead from the sinking of the Villa de Pitanxo fishing vessel last week off the coast of Newfoundland.

People in Spain waited soberly for the arrival of the Airbus A400M that took off from the St. John's airport for the journey across the Atlantic Ocean.

Spain declared a day of mourning across the country today in honour of the tragedy, which killed nine men and left three survivors, while 12 crew members remain missing at sea.

The official residence of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez tweeted today that he once again extends his condolences to the families of the missing and deceased crew members.

The Villa de Pitanxo sank Feb. 15 about 460 kilometres off Newfoundland's eastern coast.

Spanish officials said the sunken vessel's crew included 16 Spaniards, five Peruvians and three workers from Ghana.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb. 21, 2022.
