Man and his dog escape burning SUV

KELOWNA – A routine drive home nearly turned disastrous when a local business owner’s SUV caught fire on Benvoulin Rd. Wednesday night.

John Bokitch was driving home from picking up his 5-year-old dog Shilo when he noticed the car behind him trying to get his attention.

“Some girls behind me were honking their horn and came up beside me and said I had flames coming out,” he says. “I pulled over and turned the car off.”

He got out of the 1997 Range Rover, registered to his business, and saw flames coming from the front wheel wells.

“It was quite a surprise when I got out and saw the flames," he says.

The fire started shortly after 6 p.m. and within a few minutes, the front end of the vehicle was engulfed.

“I’d say it’s probably a write-off.”

Bokitch is the owner of Kelowna Autosport on Leathead Rd.
