B.C.’s police watchdog called to investigate Princeton RCMP

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been called in to investigate whether or not RCMP action or inaction lead to the death of Princeton man.

The IIO investigators are looking into a March 13 incident involving police called to the 2000 block of the Princeton-Summerland Road around 6 p.m.

RCMP arrived to find a man and a woman at the location, according to an IIO media release. The man was suffering from a serious injury that appears to have been self-inflicted.

B.C. Ambulance personnel were called to the scene and attempted life-saving measures but the man died.

RCMP had spoken to the man on two occasions in the two days prior to his death, IIO said.

The Independent Investigations Office was called in on March 15 to investigate whether or not police actions or inactions played a role in the man’s death.

The IIO is an independent civilian oversight agency that investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
