Taste of spring on Sunday breaks temperature records in Salmon Arm, Clinton

There were hints of spring in the air this weekend as a couple of high temperature records were set in the Thompson-Okanagan region with more warm temperatures expected today.

Environment Canada says Clinton’s daytime high temperature of 6.7 Celsius yesterday, Feb. 21, was the highest temperature recorded for that community on that date since record keeping began in 1974. The previous high was 6.5 C, which was set in 1988.

Salmon Arm also set a new daily high temperature record yesterday with the mercury climbing to 11.8 C, which beat the previous high of 10.5 C set in 1978. That’s the highest temperature recorded for Feb. 21 in Salmon Arm since 1893.

The region’s four major cities were warm as well on Sunday.

Kamloops reached a high of 13.2 C, while in Vernon the mercury climbed to 7.2 C. Kelowna reached a high of 7.2 C and Penticton saw a daily high on Sunday of 7.7 C.

The warm temperatures are expected to stick around today with a high of 10 C expected in Kamloops and Penticton, and a high of 9 C in Vernon and Kelowna.

Normal daily highs and lows for Kamloops this time of year are 6 C and -3 C. Normal temperatures for this time of year in Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton are highs of 4 C and lows of -4 C.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
