iN NUMBERS: Candy, costumes and car crashes on Halloween in BC

Everyone celebrates Halloween differently. Some folks hand out candy, others like to party and some people get hurt.

ICBC surveyed 2,616 people to ask them how they’re celebrating Halloween this year, and the corporation also tallied up the number of vehicle crashes on the spookiest night of the year.

Here are the numbers:

  • 57: Per cent of British Columbians said they decorate their house or yard for Halloween. 
  • 34: Per cent of British Columbians said they are going to dress up in a costume for Halloween. 
  • 24: Per cent of respondents to the survey say they will watch a horror movie. 
  • 24: Per cent of respondents said they take kids trick-or-treating.
  • 23: Per cent of British Columbians visit a pumpkin patch as part of their Halloween celebration. 
  • 17: Per cent of those surveyed plan to either host or go to a Halloween party. 
  • 17: Per cent was the increase in 911 calls in B.C. last Halloween, but E-Comm – the people that answer those calls – are expecting a bigger spike this year since it’s on a Friday.
  • 806: Car crashes happen in B.C. on Halloween, on average. 
  • 219: People are injured in car crashes in B.C. on Halloween, on average.
