Kelowna business sustains ‘extensive smoke damage’ after fire

Kelowna firefighters battled a smoky fire yesterday that damaged a two-storey business.

At roughly 9:30 p.m. last night, Nov. 27, Kelowna Fire Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call reporting smoke coming from inside a building in the 3000 block of Appaloosa Road, according to a press release issued from the fire department.

Firefighters found smoke inside a two-storey business with a single suite below.  A offensive fire attack was deployed and the fire was controlled from the interior, according to the release.

The building sustained minor fire damage but extensive smoke damage to the upper level. The tenant in the lower level was allowed back into the unit as there was no damage to it, according to the release.

Four engines, a command unit, a rescue truck and 18 fire personnel were on scene to fight the fire along with assistance from RCMP and Emergency Health Services.

The cause of the fire was oily rags left in a open garbage container, according to the press release.

The Kelowna Fire Department  is reminding residents that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives, so remember to check the batteries on a regularly.
