Lake Country to expand RCMP detachment, new police station delayed

A Canada Post building in Lake Country will be repurposed to expand the local RCMP detachment.

The District of Lake Country bought the property for $1.12 million so it could connect with the existing detachment building on Berry Road, according to a district news release issued today, Oct. 8.

The expansion means the district can delay the “immediate construction” of a new RCMP detachment at the former BC Tree Fruits property at 9718 Bottom Wood Lake Road.

“Back in 2023, the 3211 Berry Road property was identified as being a suitable candidate for acquisition for the purpose of providing additional space for the RCMP detachment and staff contacted Canada Post to express interest in the property,” Mayor Blaire Ireland said.

The real estate deal was paid through reserves after negotiations.

Lake Country now owns three of the four properties on the plot of land between Berry Road, Grant Road and Main Street. The fourth remains owned by Telus.

It’s not clear when a new RCMP detachment at the BC Tree Fruits property will be built. Lake Country purchased that property for $9.1 million in a court-ordered sale last year.
