Missing man’s body pulled from river in Kamloops

The body of a foreign student who was swept away by the river in Kamloops was recovered Tuesday.

Kamloops RCMP said his body was pulled from the water near McArthur Island Park on July 15, more than a week after the search began.

“We hope that his discovery can bring a small amount of closure for his family and friends,” Sgt. Chris Kienzle of Kamloops RCMP said in a news release.

He was with a group of friends at Overlander Park when he tried retrieving a volleyball from the river. He was last seen getting caught in the undercurrent when police were called around 5:14 p.m., July 6, according to Kamloops RCMP.

Search and rescue crews assisted RCMP in the effort to find the Thompson Rivers University student, who has not been identified.

It’s one of several river drowning deaths in Kamloops in recent years and it has prompted calls to bolster river safety efforts, namely from Rob Griffiths who was credited with saving foreign students from drowning last year.
