Police watchdog investigating Chase RCMP after woman jumps from bridge

B.C.'s police watchdog is investigating an incident involving a Chase RCMP officer after a woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after she jumped from a bridge.

On Oct. 2, at approximately 12:05 p.m., the Chase RCMP received a report that a young woman wearing a black sweater and dark stretchy jeans had jumped in front of a vehicle on Pine Street before walking away.

A Chase RCMP officer went to the area and spoke to a young woman matching the description provided, according to the Independent Investigations Office of B.C.'s news release.

A few minutes later, the RCMP received another call that a young woman had jumped from the Pine Street Bridge. Emergency Health Services transported the woman to a local hospital with serious injuries, according to the press release.

It was quickly determined that this was the same young woman the officer had recently spoken to.

The independent investigation's office is investigating to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played in the serious harm of the woman, according to the news release.

The office is asking any person who saw or recorded the incident to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or using the contact form online.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in B.C. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
