iN PHOTOS: Horseshoe sculptor adds to display at Penticton Regional Hospital

A South Okanagan sculptor known for his metalwork creations made of used horseshoes recently added a couple of bear cubs to a public display of his work at Penticton Regional Hospital.

Jean Ouellon is a retired millwright who recently made headlines after completing a COVID-19-inspired salmon sculpture.

Ouellon says he "reunited a mother bear with her cubs," as he delivered and installed two additional bear cub sculptures to go with a mother bear sculpture already on display in front of the new David Kampe tower.

K.H. Kemp Thompson Inc. sponsored the installation of the sculptures, which were placed last Tuesday, Sept. 1.

“We’re thrilled and honoured to be part of the art installation to the existing mother bear," Nicole Thompson says.

She said hospital officials were quite keen to have them added to the display as well.

Those sculptures were sponsored by Barry Beecroft Fuels and the Penticton Industrial Development Association, Thompson says.

All of Ouellon’s work is made from used horseshoes. He says the inspiration comes from a desire not to waste. He’s made birds, fish, bears, pigs and other animals from locally-sourced used horseshoes, selling some sculptures but also giving many away.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
