Strong thunderstorms in weekend forecast raise flooding concerns in Okanagan, Shuswap, Kamloops
Environment Canada is warning of heavy rain from thunderstorms forecast this weekend throughout the Okanagan, Shuswap and South Thompson regions.
The widespread rainfall Sunday, May 31, from the low pressure system forecast to make its way through the region could put a strain on rivers and streams already running high with spring runoff.
The weather will change dramatically on Saturday, as the weather system arrives in southern B.C. from Washington State, according to a special weather statement issued by Environment Canada.
When the cold front arrives, temperatures are expected to drop from the 30s to the upper teens.
That will make conditions ideal for the development of strong thunderstorms with frequent lightning and very strong wind gusts, the special weather statement said. Heavy rain is also expected to accompany the storms.
Environment Canada meteorologists will monitor the situation as the weekend approaches.
