Animal services being maintained at BC SPCA branches

The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting services at BC SPCA branches.

BC SPCA said in a media release issued today, March 16, that while services remain operational at this time, reduced front-line staffing and staff working from home may significantly limit the services available in some locations.

“We are monitoring the situation daily and will provide regular updates on the BC SPCA website,” chief operating officer Craig Daniell said in the release.

“Our goal is continue providing urgently needed care for animals in need while protecting the health of our staff, volunteers and members of the public. In some locations, community service levels may be reduced and some events and programs cancelled as we strive to protect public health and direct resources to our most essential services."

The public is urged not to visit SPCA facilities if sick or recently returned from travel outside Canada.

Daniell said animals are still available for adoption, “but we encourage people to view the animals online prior to visiting an SPCA facility to reduce the amount of human contact and interaction.”

Complaints of animal cruelty and neglect will continue to be handled but with enhanced safety precautions in place.

Although there is not yet evidence of dogs and cats getting ill from the novel coronavirus, precautions should be taken when handling animals from affected human households, the SPCA said. They may have virus particles on the outside of their bodies.

Animals should be included in any emergency planning, with at least a two-week supply of pet food, supplies and medications on hand.
