Kelowna cardboard compactor fire deemed suspicious

A cardboard compactor fire that was sparked in Kelowna Tuesday night has been deemed suspicious.

At approximately 11 p.m. the Kelowna Fire Department Dispatch Center received a fire alarm signal from a retail business in the 2200 block of Baron Rd. On route, an employee of the store confirmed fire in the recycling cardboard compactor.

The first officer on scene reported visible smoke coming from the exterior of the compactor where it connected to the building. Crews entered the rear of the store and were met with heavy smoke conditions.

"They quickly located and extinguished the fire," Platoon Capt. John Kelly said in a press release. "There was no structural damage to the building and the fire was contained to the compactor. KFD responded with two engines and a command vehicle with nine personnel. The fire is deemed suspicious and is being investigated by the RCMP."
