Four-in-five consumers shopping Canadian in wake of American tariff threat: poll

The majority of shoppers are buying more Canadian products and boycotting products from the U.S. in response to the recent American tariff threats, according to a survey by Angus Reid Institute. 

U.S. President Donald Trump has stoked resentment in Canada by threatening sweeping tariffs on Canadian products and repeatedly suggesting the U.S. should absorb Canada as a state.

A new Angus Reid poll has found 85% of Canadians say they have either already replaced products from the U.S., or plan to, while just under half say they are replacing as many products as they can find substitutes for and 37% are replacing products they can find substitutes of similar prices and quality.

Groceries are where the biggest consumer changes are being made with 98% of Canadians looking for Made in Canada labels.

Almost 80% of Canadians say they’re committed to buying more Canadian products, while almost 60% say they will boycott products from the U.S.

Where travel is concerned, half of Canadians say they are going to cancel or delay their trips to the United States.
