Kelowna RCMP crackdown on youth ‘social disorder’ downtown, Orchard Park mall

Kelowna RCMP are cracking down on youths getting up to no good at the mall and downtown.

RCMP have been investigating an increase in youth related incidents over the past several weeks including fights, unlawful alcohol and drug consumption and social disorder, according to a press release from police.

Most of the incidents have been on Friday and Saturday nights around Orchard Park Mall and downtown.

“Our Community Youth Safety Officers have been working collaboratively with the School District to information share and develop the necessary messaging to identify youth and their parents,” Kelowna RCMP Insp. Jason Charney said in the release.

“We are also working with other partner agencies to identify the root cause of some of these issues, including increased access to youth programs, resources and enhanced outreach efforts.”

Police patrols have been augmented so officers can engage with the youth and address any concerns or crimes.

“While we strive to build relationships with our youth and provide the safest environment for all members of our community, these are the types of incidents we simply have zero tolerance for and are making this very clear,” Charney said.

Police are encouraging parents to speak with their kids about being responsible in public and the consequences of crime and disruption.

RCMP want people to report incidents involving youth to the non-emergency line 250-762-3300.
