18-year-old who fell through ice on Shuswap Lake found dead

An 18-year-old man who fell through the ice on Shuswap Lake over the weekend has been found dead.

RCMP received reports that a man fell through the ice between the Raven subdivision and Sandy Point in Salmon Arm just after 2 p.m. on Feb. 8, according to a press release from police.

After an extensive search the man was found dead late in the afternoon yesterday, Feb. 10.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has deeply affected the family, first responders, and the community,” Staff Sgt. Simon Scott said in the release. “Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the young man during this incredibly difficult time.”

Salmon Arm Search and Rescue, the Salmon Arm Fire Department, and BC Emergency Health Services immediately attended the scene and started searching for the man after he fell in. The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team later came in to assist.

RCMP want to urge the public to stay off frozen lakes since ice that may appear stable can quickly become life-threatening.

“Our officers and Search and Rescue partners have witnessed the dangers firsthand, and we cannot stress enough the importance of avoiding frozen bodies of water,” Scott said. “We urge everyone to take extreme caution and prioritize safety to prevent another tragedy.”

Police will not provide more details at this time.
