Crystal clear skies for Snow Moon viewing in Kamloops, Okanagan

This month’s full moon arrives with great night time viewing conditions in the Okanagan and Kamloops with the forecast calling for clear skies.

February’s full moon is call the Snow Moon, named for the snowy season it shines in and also goes by numerous other names including Bald Eagle Moon, Raccoon Moon and Goose Moon.

One Indigenous theme of this month’s moon names is scarcity, as the Cherokee names of Month of the Bony Moon and Hungry Moon point to the fact that food was hard to come by at this time, according to the Old Farmers Almanac.

The Snow Moon reaches peak illumination at 8:53 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, and will appear full from Tuesday night through to Friday night.

Clear overnight skies are in the forecast for the Thompson Okanagan region with overnight temperatures at roughly -15 Celsius.

The best way to view the full moon is to dress up warmly and find a comfortable spot away from light pollution.

Photographer Dennis Kitto took a photo of the waxing moon at McQueen Lake near Kamloops at 3 a.m. on Feb. 10 that shows clear, starry skies, a bright moon and sparkling snow.
