Flurries, moderate temperatures in the Okanagan forecast for the rest of the year

Flurries and above-seasonal temperatures are forecast for the Okanagan for the last week of the year, but no significant accumulations are expected.

Environment Canada meteorologist Mike MacDonald says a front crossing the coast could bring light snow to the valley tonight, but no major systems are forecast for the Okanagan.

"There's a chance of flurries on several days, but that's about it," he says.

Today, residents can expect mainly cloudy skies in the Okanagan, with a 40 per cent chance of flurries late this afternoon and tonight.

Snow accumulations could reach 2 cm overnight, with a high of 0 Celsius expected and a low of -3 C in Vernon and Kelowna.

Penticton should see a high of 1 C and a low of -1 C.

Wind chill could reach -5 C this evening in Vernon and Kelowna.

In Penticton, winds south at 30 km/h gusting to 40 should make it feel like -8 C in that city.

Friday should see cloudy skies and a 60 per cent chance of flurries early in the morning. Skies should clear to a mix of sun and cloud near noon with a high of 0 C and a low to -7 C under clearing overnight skies.

Clouds are expected Saturday along with a 60 per cent chance of flurries and a high of -2 C.

Clouds are expected to remain overnight with a low of -4 C.

Sunday should see a sun and cloud mix along with a high of -1 C. Cloudy periods and a low of -4 C are forecast overnight.

A mix of sun and cloud is also in the forecast for Monday with a high to -1 C. Clouds with a 60 per cent chance of flurries is forecast overnight.

Temperatures are on the rise on Tuesday, New Year’s Eve, with clouds skies and a 60 per cent chance of flurries expected Tuesday’s high should reach 1 C with an overnight low of -1 C under cloudy skies, again with a 60 per cent chance of flurries.

More clouds are forecast for Wednesday, New Year's Day, with a 60 per cent chance of showers and a high to 2 C.

Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton’s normal high and low for late December is -2 C and -8 C.

As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
