Man dead after driving snowmobile off cliff

SICAMOUS – The RCMP have confirmed a 49-year-old man was killed in a snowmobile accident in Shuswap backcountry Friday afternoon, Jan. 9.

Police say the man was driving his snowmobile in the Owl Head Recreation Area east of Sicamous when he mistakenly drove off a 40-foot high cliff.

RCMP officers, paramedics with the B.C. Ambulance Service and volunteers with both the Salmon Arm and Vernon Search and Rescue teams responded to the accident at about 12:30 p.m.

Both Vernon Search and Rescue and B.C. Ambulance helicopters were on the scene within an hour.

The victim couldn’t be resuscitated and he was pronounced dead, according to a RCMP media release.

The B.C. Coroners Service and the RCMP are investing.

Police aren’t releasing the victim’s name until they speak with his family.

I know this man’s family, and his brother, for one, is hysterical. My mom dated his brother, who I just mentioned. He was loved by his family, and I pray that this is the time where God speaks to his family and brings them to him, because I know that they don’t know God as well as I do.
