Former Vernon BC United candidate suing party over unpaid expenses

Former BC United candidate Kevin Acton is suing the party for $10,000 worth of unpaid expenses.

Acton filed the suit in the small claims court stating the party has not paid him back $10,589.

“I have incurred expenses on behalf of BC United as a candidate. They have not yet reimbursed me no (sic) have been contact to make arrangements to reimburse me for the outstanding balance,” the Notice of Claim reads.

Acton, the current mayor of Lumby, was selected by BC United as its candidate in the riding of Vernon-Lumby in late 2023. However, when the party suspended its campaign in August 2024, Acton went on the run as an independent.

He came in third place with 15% of the vote.

The financial state of the BC United party is unclear, but last December it sent a fundraising email asking for hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep it afloat. The CBC reported the party owed $930,000 to vendors and some former candidates.

In Acton’s Notice of Claim, he states the expenses he incurred on behalf of BC United could put him and the party in contravention of the BC Elections Act.

Acton appears to be the only former candidate to be taking BC United to the small claims court.

B.C. United has not yet responded to the suit and did not immediately return iNFOnews.ca’s request for comment.

Acton was not immediately available for comment.
