A disaster was narrowly averted and HIghway 33 was temporarily shut down as firefighters dealt with a camper van that went up in flames while gassing up.

Kelowna Fire Department dispatch received numerous 911 calls at around 4:37 p.m. Nov. 5, reporting a van ablaze at a gas station located on the 1400 block of Highway 33.

"Arriving fire crews found a fully engulfed in flames, holiday camper van. Flames were extending into the overhead roof of the gas station," Kelly Stephens, platoon captain for KFD, said in a press release.

The highway was shut down while fire crews extinguished the flames and checked exposures for damage.

Luckily, said Stephens, no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is not deemed suspicious.
