Cultural centre in Toronto’s Regent Park wins architecture award
TORONTO – Daniels Spectrum, a cultural centre that is helping to transform Toronto’s downtown Regent Park neighbourhood, has won a prestigious Civic Trust Award in London, England.
The three-storey centre, designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects of Toronto, opened in 2012, providing space for community-based arts and cultural groups. This month it is hosting “You’re Not Here,” a celebration of feminist art featuring works by 25 local artists.
The U.K.-based Civic Trust Awards, established in 1959, recognize the best in architecture, design, planning, landscape and public art. This year’s awards ceremony was held March 6 at London’s Globe Theatre.
Daniels Spectrum was the only award winner from Canada.
Revitalization of Regent Park began in 2005, with construction expected to continue for several more years. The 28-hectare social housing site, managed by Toronto Community Housing, was built in the 1940s.
