Police say 4th Italian skier has died of injuries from avalanche in Swiss Alps

BERLIN – Police say a fourth person has died from injuries suffered in an avalanche that struck five Italian skiers Saturday near the Great St. Bernhard Pass in the Swiss Alps.

Swiss police said Sunday that the man died in hospital overnight. Two women and another man died Saturday after a massive rescue operation succeeded in pulling them out of up to 2.5 metres (8.2 feet) of snow.

A fifth skier suffered minor injuries while a sixth person avoided being swept away by the avalanche that struck the group — all in their early fifties and from the Milan region of Italy — at an altitude of 2,300 metres (7,546 feet) near an area known locally as “The Valley of Death.”

Each year dozens of people die in avalanches in the Alps.
