ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The leader of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Progressive Conservative party has won a seat in the provincial legislature.
Ches Crosbie won a byelection Thursday in the riding of Windsor Lake, in the St. John’s area.
The 65-year-old lawyer became party leader in April.
Crosbie is the son of Tory giant John Crosbie, who served in the cabinets of former prime ministers Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney and ran for the leadership of the federal party.
John Crosbie greeted his son at the door of his campaign headquarters Thursday night, where a jubilant group of campaign supporters had gathered after the win.
Ches Crosbie said he was grateful that both his parents were on hand for the victory.
A provincial election is set for next year.
