Most actively traded companies on the TSX

TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (13,861.52, up 156.38 points):

Talisman Energy Inc. (TSX:TLM). Oil and gas. Up $2.87, or 48.07 per cent, to $8.84 on 82.5 million shares. The Calgary-based company made a big contribution to the energy sector’s gain. Its shares rocketed as Spanish energy giant Repsol said that it will pay US$8.3 billion for all the shares of the company, or US$8 per share (C$9.33). Including assumed debt, the deal values Talisman at US$13 billion.

Yorbeau Resources Inc. (TSX:YRB.A). Miner. Unchanged at seven cents on 18.2 million shares.

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Oil and gas. Up $1, or 7.39 per cent, to $14.53 on 7.8 million shares. The Calgary-based company is bucking a trend that has seen several energy companies reduce capital expenditure forecasts amid sharply lower oil prices. Instead, Encan said it is budgeting between $2.7 billion and $2.9 billion for capital spending next year, up from its 2014 estimate of between $2.5 billion and $2.6 billion.

Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TSX:PWT). Oil and gas. Up five cents, or 2.17 per cent, to $2.35 on 7.6 million shares.

Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (TSX:CNQ). Oil and gas. Up 39 cents, or 4.53 per cent, to $8.99 on 6.7 million shares.

Bankers Petroleum Ltd. (TSX:BNK). Oil and gas. Up 18 cents, or 6.90 per cent, to $2.79 on six million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

BlackBerry (TSX:BB). Smartphone equipment, services. Up four cents, or 0.36 per cent, to $11.04 on 3.8 million shares. The company is getting a major boost from Export Development Canada as part of US$850 million in financial assistance being given to European telecom giant Vodafone. The Crown corporation has struck a five-year loan agreement with Vodafone, which includes a commitment of $750 million to BlackBerry’s handsets, software and support services.
