Jones rebounds from earlier loss to advance to quarter-finals at Canadian Open

YORKTON, Sask. – Olympic champion Jennifer Jones rebounded from an earlier loss on Friday to beat fellow Winnipeg native Jill Thurston 6-2 in the evening draw at the Canadian Open curling championship.

Jones scored singles from the fourth end on, forcing both teams to stop play after seven ends.

Earlier in the day, Scotland’s Even Muirhead defeated Jones 8-2 after scoring deuces in the third, fourth and fifth ends.

Both Jones and Muirhead will play each other in Saturday’s quarter-finals.

In the other evening draw, Switzerland’s Binia Feltscher edged Nina Roth of the United States 5-4 to advance to the quarters.

Earlier in the day, Edmonton’s Chelsea Carey beat Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald 9-7 and Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin slipped by Feltscher 5-3.

On the men’s side, Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., edged Scotland’s David Murdoch to advance to Saturday’s C division qualifer.

Howard scored three in the first end and held off a late attack from Murdoch for the victory.

Calgary’s John Morris also advanced to the qualifier in the other men’s evening draw with a 7-5 win over Charlottetown’s Adam Casey.

Earlier in the day, Olympic champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., beat St. John’s, N.L., native Brad Gushue 7-3.

Jim Cotter of Kelowna/Vernon, B.C., beat Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher 8-3 while Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock downed Toronto’s John Epping 6-4 in earlier action.
